Outdoor Dog Bed: Pet Gear at DogCheapSleeps.com
My Great Danes kept destroying their dog beds. So I decided to create a better outdoor dog bed.
Dogcheapsleeps.com evolved out of necessity. I breed, raise and show Great Danes in my limited spare time. As with most dog breeders I’ve had my own share of heartbreak, headache and outrageous expenses. Not the largest expense, but running close to the top, are dog beds and other pet gear. Great Danes, after all, need very large dog beds for their spoiled little butts. Evidently the softer and more expensive, the better. The cheaper, and human preferred models are evidently best suited as tug of war toys.
I am a commercial electrical contractor by trade via careers as a waitress, pencil engraver, magazine sales, book store manager, secretary, typesetter,
collections, horse trainer, draftsman (person) and electrical designer. My office manager was dragged into Dogcheapsleeps.com by unwittingly answering an email sent to her over a weekend. She can pick up a pattern, and actually make something with fabric from those flimsy paper instructions.
Oddly when my office manager first came to work here she was not a dog person. My black male Great Dane was out in the shop yard when she showed up for an interview, and she thought, "How nice, a dog statue." Until I brought the statue into the building. Ye gads, the thing slobbered, shed, leaned and fell head over heels in love. An unrequited love, sadly for the dog. Fortunately Great Danes are great ambassadors and eventually she was won over, with reservations. She learned to say No! to the dogs and mean it.
Then the inevitable happened; she leashed my black Dane to her office chair to save some unsuspecting visitor the horror of a 36", 180 pound Dane loving on them. Within minutes her chair came flying by, dog in the lead, with no office manager on board. The visitor made a hasty retreat. I do believe that was the turning point for her.
One Saturday in search, again, of an outdoor dog bed for these brutes I found a website that sold, among other pet gear, rather inexpensively by comparison, large dog beds made from foam scraps. I immediately ordered two huge beds. Upon receipt I knew we needed to get some kind of cover for the beds or these bed’s lives would be rather short. After yet another trip to the dumpster with a destroyed dog bed in tow I decided I’ll just find some waterproof covers.
A mild stroke of genius? Not quite, I probably spent the better part of three weekends in search. I could find waterproof dog beds at prices that rival my mortgage payment, but no covers sold separately. When I found covers that made claim to being waterproof, they turned out to be canvas or treated cloth. I assume they were treated with the can of spray stuff we used to be able to buy in stores.
My attention turned to the medical industry: certainly they had a need for waterproof bedding and pillows. I was disappointed again. Wrong dimensions, way too expensive. Then my attention turned to zoos and zoo animals – they must have all kinds of pet gear, right? Who would have guessed they don’t buy big, waterproof, overstuffed beds for those animals?
As I sat staring at my screen, a little light came on (my brain, not the monitor), I let it come to full brightness and said why not? Dogcheapsleeps.com! We’ll make our own covers, and then the second light came on, and sell them on the internet. That’s when the email went out to the lady who knows how to sew.
Would I pay more for a Dogcheapsleeps.com bed like that? You betcha. We finally accomplished our objectives, creating waterproof, weatherproof pet beds and pet bed covers. No dog smell, no hair sticking to the cloth or other covering, ability to wash with a sponge or hose, easily disinfected and the dog bed life had just been extended indefinitely. And it’s the perfect outdoor dog bed!
How many thousands of dog bed dollars have been wasted because of dog accidents, or stinky, hairy beds. Dogcheapsleeps.com is finally at a point where we are seeing success. Amazingly we can get product out in as little as two days despite the distractions of running a successful electrical contracting business.
Dogcheapsleeps.com beds are truly made in the USA, including our fabric, thread, Velcro and finished dog beds. One caveat, we can only attest to products purchased in America; their source of origin could come into question. Ours are made in the USA, with weatherproof covers that are manufactured in sunny Arizona. The best part?
